NC Trout Fishing: The WNC Fly Fishing Trail

The first and only fly fishing trail in the United States, the WNC Fly Fishing Trail, is located in Jackson County and features some of the best trout waters in the Great Smoky Mountains. Southern Conference Basketball Tournament this week in Asheville

March  2-5     Southern Conference Basketball Tournament  Watch your favorite SoCon team on the court this week in Asheville, a city with a special love of B-ball. While you're in Asheville plan extra time for some R&R  at great restaurants, galleries and downtown nightlife.

The Tournament promises to be a great experience for athletes, faculty, students, parents, alumni and all the visiting  fans. Men and Women's games will be played at the Asheville Civic Center and UNC - Asheville Sports Arena.

Fire on the Rock Chef's Competition in Blowing Rock

February 28    Fire on the Rock in Blowing Rock NC - Chefs from local restaurants will battle head-to-head in exciting single elimination battles every Tuesday and Wednesday at Crippen's Restaurant. You, the diner, judge a six course "blind" menu created around a secret ingredient. Prepaid reservations are required.

"Grill or be Grilled" is the slogan in this annual diner-judged food competition that began in 2005 during the inaugural year of the Blue Ridge Wine and Food Festival in Blowing Rock, North Carolina with just six chefs. This year's competition includes sixteen chefs who vie for the grand prize of $2500 and the coveted "Red Chef Jacket".

The competition is waged in brackets, with winners meeting winners every Tuesday and Wednesday until the grand final on April 11. Weekly winners as well as voting statistics are posted online. Live at the Arcade Tonight in Asheville

February 17 from 5-8 PM  - Downtown buskers Blind Boy Chocolate and the Milk Shieks will perform at Live at the Grove Arcade, the new series featuring free local music taking place the third Friday of January, February and March.

The band describes themselves as “a dirty street-performing band that is occasionally allowed inside to do our little diddely-dee on a stage.” The group features Dwight “Sawman” Hawkins on wood saw, tenor banjo and vocals; Nicky “The Squirrel” Marshall on mandolin, harmonica and vocals; Antone “T-Bird” Costa on guitar, kazoo and vocals; and Alex “Spiders Nest” Brady on washtub Bass.

The band performed at Merlefest 2011. The repertoire is largely drawn from a bank of early American music consisting of both black and white string and jug band music and draws on the pre-war blues, ragtime, early jazz and songster traditions.

The Grove Arcade Merchants Association sponsors the Live at the Grove Arcade evenings of music, food and drinks and most stores are open late. Beer and wine are available for purchase and attendees get free popcorn with each drink purchase.

Do Tell StoryFest in Hendersonville this Weekend

February 11-12   Do Tell StoryFest   3rd annual Festival Held at the Flat Rock Playhouse Downtown Theatre, listen to stories from rhymes to folk tales to history to modern personal stories from the region's best performers.

The Saturday festival concert features renown storyteller and singer Michael Reno Harrell.Harrell is an award winning songwriter, as well as a veteran storyteller and entertainer from the Southern Appalachian Mountains. Michael's  stories are familiar and razor sharp with a point. His brand of entertainment appeals to a diverse audience.

David Novak is a remarkable speaker with a background in theatre arts including Shakespeare, clowning, creative dramatics, playwriting, and directing.
