Folkmoot USA North Carolina's International Festival

July 18 - 29   Folkmoot USA  - the International Festival of North Carolina, is a two-week celebration of the world's cultural heritage through folk music and dance. Held each summer in a variety of locations across the mountains of Western North Carolina, Folkmoot features performances, a parade and workshops by up to 350 performers from about ten countries.

Performers demonstrate cultural heritage through colorful, authentic and original reproduction costumes, lively dance and traditional music. During its 28-year history, over 200 folk groups from more than 100 countries have shared their heritage and culture at the Folkmoot Festival.

Highlights of this year's festival include:
 

• The Parade of Nations and Folkmoot at First Friday Street dance in downtown Waynesville on July 20
• The Grand Opening at the Stompin’ Ground in Maggie Valley on July 20
• Haywood County Arts Council’s International Festival Day on  Main Street in Waynesille on July 21
• World Friendship Day held in the  Stuart Auditorium at  Lake Junaluska on July 22
• Performances in towns across Western North Carolina including: Canton, Burnsville, Bryson City, Asheville, Flat Rock, Cullowhee, Franklin, Waynesville, Maggie Valley, Cherokee, Clyde and Lake Junaluska
• Extravaganza Matinee and evening performances at the Stompin’ Ground in Maggie Valley on July 27
• Candlelight Closing at Stuart Auditorium in Lake Junaluska on July 29.

Blue Ridge DanceFest­ at the Blue Ridge Music Center

 July 7  : Blue Ridge DanceFest­   Celebrate the holiday weekend with two great old-time stringbands and some of the best flatfoot dancers from Virginia and North Carolina!  Whether you love to dance or just prefer to watch, you won't want to miss the Independence holiday weekend concert on July 7th. This show, dedicated to mountain dance traditions, is perfect for the whole family with quality entertainment and music for both the young and young at heart.

Award winning flatfoot dancers: Eddie Bond, C.T. Janning, Phil Jamison, Williette Hinton and Anna Roberts-Gevalt from Virginia and North Carolina will converge at the Blue Ridge Music Center to show their best moves along with two of the most popular old-time stringbands: The New Ballard's Branch Bogtrotters and Mountain Park Old-Time Band - providing the best traditional dance music a dancer can dream of.

Come early and enjoy the free 5 PM dance showcase in the BRMC small theater (phone to reserve seating) and learn some dance steps yourself at Phil Jamison's 6pm flatfoot dance workshop, (free with concert ticket-all levels welcome).

The New Ballard's Branch Bogtrotters are well known for their high-energy dance tunes and fiddler, Eddie Bond's soaring vocals. The NBBB have won the prestigious first place old-time band prize at the Old Fiddlers' Convention in Galax several times, have played across the US and appeared as special guests at numerous festivals including the Smithsonian Folk-Life Festival at the Library of Congress. Mountain Park Old-Time Band always pleases the crowd with their driving fiddle and banjo tunes. This local group can often be found at Fiddlers' Conventions and rural dancehalls throughout the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The Blue Ridge Dance Traditions concert starts at 7 PM on Saturday, July 7th. Seating opens at 5:30 PM. Admission $5. Children 12 and under are free. Bring your lawn chairs and Picnics welcome, with Smokehouse BBQ available as usual. What better way is there to celebrate the holiday than to be with your friends and family at the foot of beautiful Fishers Peak enjoying and supporting traditional music and dance?

Rennie Harris Puremovement's this Weekend in Asheville

Bill Medley of the Righteous Brothers performs on Thursday, September 15, 7:30 PM at The Foundation Performing Arts Center in Spindale, NC. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Bill Medley is a seminal figure in the history of American music. Best known as half of the unmistakable duo, The Righteous Brothers, Medley's 1987 duet with Jennifer Warnes - (I’ve Had) The Time of My Life - was an integral part of the film “Dirty Dancing."


This year's Lakeside Screening of Dirty Dancing will be at picturesque Morse Park Meadows. Bring a picnic dinner, some blankets and chairs and cuddle up to watch Dirty Dancing alongside the famous Lake Lure. There will be food and beverages for sale onsite, please do not bring alcohol. Contemporary Dance Group Performs in Blowing Rock

NC Summer Events: Hendersonville Street Dances begin this week

July 11   Street Dances  - The Street Dances have been a tradition in Hendersonville NC for 92 years. The Street Dances features mountain heritage music and dance every Monday evening from July 11 through August 15. Bring a chair, admission is free.

To open the 93rd Annual Street Dances Bobby and Blue Ridge Tradition will perform along with Southern Mountain Smoke Cloggers, mountain heritage bluegrass music, clogging and square dancing. The event takes place at the Visitors Information Center-201 S. Main Street in historic downtown Hendersonville from  7:00PM-9:00PM.

Asheville's River Arts District hosts the Asheville Rites Project

May 21 at 7 PM in the River Arts District (RAD) of Asheville A Celebration of Spring, an original artistic project, takes place. A visit to the District right now will reveal a large pink mural being created inside the RiverLink Sculpture and Performance Plaza. That mural will serve as the backdrop for the Asheville Rites Project, a special live performance. This event is free and open to the public.

The project is a public performance collaboration between painter Milly Rose Freeman, dancer Garth Grimball, and musician Michael Libramento. In April, Molly installed a series of wall-sized panels and began painting. When complete the panels will set the stage for a dance piece choreographed by Garth. Michael will compose an original score for the piece that will be played live during the performance.

According to the artists, the overall themes for this project are Springtime, rites of passage, and the reemergence of life and color that are associated with the season. Springtime by nature is a celebration seeking to channel that energy into an art event that the whole community can experience. The colors will be vibrant, the movements will be lively, the music will be fresh. The creators want this project to be an occasion to explore and share in the vitality of the season.

Garth's piece will involve 15 or so dancers from various companies and studios throughout Asheville and the surrounding areas. His choreography will draw inspiration from Jerome Robbins' "Opus Jazz," as well as specifically from the mural design and original score.

Music lovers will delight in this weekend's Rogers Park Summer Tracks Concert Series  under the stars in Tryon NC tonight. This week features Sol Driven Train opening with their Children's Show.
