Mountain Spirits: Wine and Beer Tastings and Events for the week of 12/9/15

December10, 2015 at Brusin' Ales, 66 Broadway Street in downtown Asheville NC  5 - 7 PM Ballast Point Brewing Beer Tastings:

Grunion Pale Ale: Our Grunion Pale Ale wasn't born on a beach, but in a backyard. Originating from an employee-only home brew contest, this award-winning hoppy pale ale is named after the tiny local fish known for late night frolics on shore. A pair of new hop varieties lend strong yet balanced summer melon aromas and herbal flavors, while a soft caramel malt sweetness holds it all together. [5.5% abv] .

Sculpin: "Our Sculpin IPA is a great example of what got us into brewing in the first place. After years of experimenting, we knew hopping an ale at five separate stages would produce something special. The result ended up being this gold-medal winning IPA, whose inspired use of hops creates hints of apricot, peach, mango and lemon flavors, but still packs a bit of a sting, just like a Sculpin fish." [7.0% abv].

Grapefruit Sculpin: "Our Grapefruit Sculpin is the latest take on our signature IPA. Some may say there are few ways to improve Sculpin's unique flavor, but the tart freshness of grapefruit perfectly complements our IPA's citrusy hop character. Grapefruit's a winter fruit, but this easy-drinking ale tastes like summer." [7.0% abv].

Habanero Sculpin: "Our Sculpin IPA with Habanero Pepper began as a crazy experiment that's taken on a life of its own. While its bright fruit notes and hoppy bite has made the original one of our favorites, this version takes that balance of flavors to the next level with the citrusy, floral heat of habaneros. Sculpin are known to sting, but this one's got a kick." [7.0% abv].

The Commodore: The Commodore came out of our search for a medium-bodied American Stout. The recipe began at our R&D pilot brewery, but quickly became a favorite of our crew. Strong flavors of roast coffee and bittersweet chocolate balance with light citrusy hop aromas, highlighted by a crisp, bitter finish. One sip of this gold medal-winning stout will have you ready to take command of your own fleet. [6.5% abv].

Victory at Sea: "Our Victory at Sea Imperial Porter is a bold, smooth brew with just the right amount of sweetness. We infused this robust porter with vanilla and San Diego's own Caffe Calabria coffee beans. The subtle roasted notes and minimal acidity of the cold brewed coffee, balances perfectly with the sweet caramel undertones of the malt, creating a winning combination for your palate." [10.0% abv].

December 11, 2015 from 5 - 7 PM at Hops and Vines, 797 Haywood Rd. Ste 100 in West Asheville NC: FREE Beer Tasting - Brooklyn Brewing - Brooklyn has been a long-time staple of craft beer with a rich history of well known brewers and a tradition of supporting homebrewers.
Brewed since 1994, Brooklyn’s Black Chocolate Stout has itself become a modern classic, heralded the world over. It achieves its dark chocolate aroma and flavor through the artful blending of six malts and months of aging. Properly kept, it will improve in the bottle for many years. This stout is the toast of the winter season in many countries, and there is nothing better to enjoy with chocolate desserts, cheesecake, ice cream, fine cheeses and roaring fireplaces
A classic Saison, an unfiltered golden farmhouse ale with a wonderfully clean malt flavor and our hero, the quirky Sorachi Ace hop, standing front and center. Dry-hopping releases Sorachi Ace’s bright, spicy aromatics to tickle the nose before ascending into a fine harmony between Pilsner malt and playful Belgian yeast.
Brooklyn Lager is amber-gold in color and displays a firm malt center supported by a refreshing bitterness and floral hop aroma. Caramel malts show in the finish. The aromatic qualities of the beer are enhanced by “dry-hopping”, the centuries-old practice of steeping the beer with fresh hops as it undergoes a long, cold maturation. The result is a wonderfully flavorful beer, smooth, refreshing and very versatile with food.

Vina Broco - This is a lovely new take on a very classic style. This 100% Mencia is rich with dark fruits and oak. Very well balanced with a velvety mouthfeel and a soft but noticable tannin balance, this would be a great mix up for the Pinot Noir drinker.
Bliss - This stunning California Pinot Noir has aromas of dried cherries and Christmas spice which are followed by fruit forward flavors. The elegant finish is highlighted by notes of sweet cranberry. A wonderful wine to go with big, rich or spicy dishes.
Routas - Pale straw color, with a light green hue. On the nose, aromas of lime sherbet, citrus, ripe pear and a hint of gooseberry come forward. On the palate, tropical fruit notes lead to a crisp, lively acidity  10% off all featured bottles on Saturday.
