Mountain Spirits: WIne and Beer Tastings this week, 6-7-12

June 8,  5 - 7 PM   Hops and Vines, 797 Haywood Rd, Ste 100 in Asheville NC.  FREE beer tasting: four taps on for free sampling and for purchase or donation by the pint. Highlights include Mark and Alex's American IPA, Alex's Double IPA,(both homebrewed) and for the lighter beer drinkers we'll have French Broad Kolsch and Sierra Nevada Summer Ale. Homebrewers are encouraged to bring beer to this tasting. 
June 9  , 3-6 PM - FREE Wine Tasting:   Portuguese Wines Portuguese wines offer quality at a great price. Come taste three great bottles of wine, all under $10! Broadbent Vinho Verde 20- Vinho Verde is easily one of our most popular styles of wine during the summer months. Conde Villar Vinho Verde Rose 2011 -This new wine in the shop will be a fun new wine to try for Vinho Verde lovers. Cone Villar Tinto 2011 - This red blend from the Vinho Verde region in Portugal delivers a great value.

1550 Hendersonville Road, Suite 102, Asheville NC Friday Winedown -  Banshee and Rickshaw Wines
- sample the entire lineup of wines from one of the hottest California-based producers in the US. Banshee Wines are absolutely blowing up all over the country.  Started by three friends, Banshee owns no vineyards of its own but works in lock-step with high-end vineyard owners and wineries to produce wines of depth, purity and balance.  They purchase really good fruit and sometimes finished barrels of wine and blend these lots together to create expressive wines that taste like they cost a lot more than they do.  $5 per person, free for Grape Nuts.

Mountain Spirits: Wine and Beer this week, 4-5-12

April 6, 5 - 7 PM   Hops and Vines, 797 Haywood Rd, Ste 100 in Asheville NC. FREE beer tasting: Bear Republic  Come sample these tasty beers from Bear Republic:  Racer 5 - This hoppy American IPA is a full bodied beer brewed American pale and crystalmalts, and heavily hopped with Chinook, Cascade, Columbus and Centennial. 7%;   Hop Rod Rye - A high gravity IPA brewed with 18% rye malt. Hop Rod Rye has a floral hop aroma and subtle caramel notes with a slightly earthy and spicy rye character;  8% Peter Brown Tribute Ale -is malty American Brown Ale, brewed with molasses, brown sugar, and hopped with Cascade and Centennial.   April 7 , 3-6 PM - FREE Wine Tasting: Line 39 Wines.   Line 39 Sauvignon Blanc - Lake County, which lies just north of Napa is emerging as a great grape growing region;  Line 39 Cabernet Sauvignon- Line 39 refers to the latitude along which many of the great wine regions in the world are found;  Line 39 Petite Sirah- This velvety full bodied red wine has dark cherry notes with a touch of oak and a long elegant finish.

A Vinous Tour Of Italy:  Garofoli Guelfo Verde - This sparkling wine hails from Central Italy, Les Marches to be exact, just east of Tuscany. ; Cantina Frentana Cococciola - This is one of the best co-operatives of Abruzzo, and this is one exotic little white wine; Cantina Sant Evasio Gavi - We now head north on our journey of obscure Italian varietals to the village of Gavi, in Italy's Piemonte zone; Tenuta Canale Sangiovese di Toscana - No, this grape isn't obscure, but no Italian wine tasting would be complete without at least one Sangiovese; Vecchia Torre Salice Salentino - A blend of Negroamaro and Malvasia Nera, this rustic red is packed with ripe berry fruit, spices, licorice and earth; Paitin Nebbiolo d'Alba "Ca Vieja" - This family run estate got its start in 1796, and they're still going really strong; Morisfarms Monteregio di Massa Marittima - This wine comes from Tuscany's western coast and from one of the finest producers in the region.  $5 per person, FREE for Grape Nuts.   April 7, 2-5 PM - Saturday Winedown: Vino Mondo wines - Kevin and Tripti Simback, owners of Vino Mondo Distributors will pour samples from their portfolio. Sartarelli Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico - This is one of the premiere Verdicchio producers in all of Italy; Forstreiter Gruner Veltliner "Kogl Krems" - Simply put, this is one of the best Gruner Veltliners your money can by; Cooper Mountain Pinot Gris Reserve - Cooper Mountain is a small, family owned and operated winery in Oregon's Willamette Valley; Cooper Hill Pinot Noir - It's really hard to find organic, Willamette Valley estate Pinot Noir for less than $20, but Tripti and Kevin have managed to do just that; Cavalli-Tenuta Degli "Le Redini" - The Wine Advocate reviewed this wine at 91 points. $5 per person, FREE for Grape Nuts.

St Patrick's Day Events: House Party at McRitchie Winery and Ciderworks

March 17, 1 PM - 5 PM at McRitchie Winery and Ciderworks, 315 Thurmond P.O. Road, Thurmond NC. St. Patrick's Day House Party - afternoon of great music, wine, hard cider and fun .  Celtic Elk will be playing traditional and contemporary Celtic tunes from 1 to 4 pm and Joey Marion will entertain and dazzle with his fancy Irish footwork. No admission charge - a $7 tasting fee applies and includes wine tasting, light Irish fare and a logo glass.
The tasting room at McRitchie Winery & Ciderworks is open Thursday through Sunday from 12 to 5 pm. The final tasting of the day is at 4:45.  Winter hours may vary and will be posted on the website. Call ahead for groups larger than six so we can provide the best visitor experience for you and all our guests.
McRitchie Winery and Ciderworks is located north of Wilkesboro and 15 minutes from  Elkin off Highway 21.

Mountain Spirits: Wine and Beer this week, February 23 2012

Feb 25-26   Third Annual Yadkin Winter Reds Event sponsored by the Town of Yadkinville and Yadkin County Tourism Development Authorities. Yadkin Winter Reds Event 2012 will include 7 wineries  featuring their 'Winter Red' (2 oz. pour) paired with a small serving of a tasty food item. Ticket prices for the weekend are $20.00 per person. Each ticketholder will be assigned to a starting winery where they will receive their souvenir glass and a map. New to this year's event will be a Sunday Brunch offered at the Third Branch Cafe inside the Yadkin Cultural Arts Center. Tickets are $10.00 per person. Spring Fling Festival South Creek Vineyards and Winery

April 29 - 30  South Creek Vineyard and Winery and Banner Greenhouses host a Spring Fling Festival. Flowers, wine & music plus Melody Cox plays Acoustic Blues & Folk Rock at the vineyard on April 30.

South Creek will have outside tables and chairs on the deck for winery customers to enjoy. Tables are a first-come, first-seated basis. As a South Creek Winery Customer, you may bring your own lawn chairs as well. Sorry, no pets allowed on premises for this event.
Banner Greenhouses will have bedding plants, hanging baskets and more.  Muddy Creek Mushroom Farm will be there too, bringing their Shitake Mushrooms for your gourmet meals.

The winery will open at 11am for this event. Banner Greenhouses will open on Fridays 8am - 5pm, & Saturdays 8am - 3pm. Wine purchased on site may be consumed at South Creek. No other alcoholic beverages are permitted on site. South Creek Winery is located at
2240 South Creek Road in Nebo, NC
