The Cradle of Forestry Celebrates Opening Day with Old TIme Plowing and Folkways

April 11, 2015    Opening Day Celebration: Old time Plowing and Folkways at The Cradle of Forestry   Step back in time to the early days of the Biltmore Forest School. Meet David and Diane Burnette and their incredible Percheron draft horses. Weather permitting, watch the horses plow the Cradle’s vegetable garden and try plowing the old way yourself.

Visit with living history volunteers as they bring traditional Blue Ridge culture to life. Event times are 9:00 PM – 5:00 PM.

Event admission is $5.00 for ages 16 and up, free for youth. America the Beautiful and Golden Age passports are honored. Included in admission: everything the site has to offer that day,  historic buildings, indoor and outdoor exhibits, trail tours as available and over 3 miles of paved trails fit for wheelchairs and strollers that allow the forest to be accessible to all.

The Cradle of Forestry is a place of people, nature, history and the future. The story of the birth of forestry in America is told through exhibits at the Forestry Discovery Center, the Biltmore Campus trail and the Forest Festival Trail. There are nature programs and special events throughout the year for all ages of nature lovers.

Great Smoky Mountains Railroad Offers Memorable Mountain Adventures for 2015

The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad is a favorite NC mountains attraction with both daily excursions and special events.  The train rides depart from Bryson City's historic depot and wind through the countryside of the beautiful Smoky Mountains.

2015 General Excursions:
Choose from one of two adventures - the Nantahala Gorge Excursion or the Tuckasegee River Excursion - and see the beauty of Western North Carolina from an open-air gondola car or upscale first class seating.
    
The Nantahala Excursion departs Bryson City traveling along the Nantahala and Tennessee Rivers for four-and-a-half hours over the 44 miles to the Nantahala Gorge and back again. Enjoy Bluegrass music and Appalachian stories along the way. The historic Trellis Bridge crosses Fontana Lake as the train travels into the beautiful Nantahala Gorge and arrives at the Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC) for a one-hour layover.

The Tuckasegee River Excursion winds through the countryside for 33 miles and 4 hours with a one and a half hour stop in the quaint historic town of Dillsboro where you may shop the unique downtown stores and galleries. The route includes a pass by the set used for the train scenes on the popular movie "The Fugitive".

NC Christmas Events: Christmas at Hendersonville's Historic Johnson Farm

December  - 1  Christmas at Historic Johnson Farm.  Christmas at the Farm will take you on a nostalgic trip into Christmas past with a tour of the1880s brick farmhouse decorated for the season and filled with original period furniture and hand-made toys. What to do in the NC Mountains: Grandfather Mountain's Habitats

As if there weren't already enough reasons why Grandfather Mountain is a "MUST SEE" on any trip to the North Carolina Mountains, there is yet another addition to the wonders of the highest point in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Luna, Grandfather Mountain's newest otter in residence, is now on display in the Otter Habitat along with her pal Nottaway. Luna and Nottaway currently have the habitat to themselves until keepers are confident that she is ready to meet Oconee and Santee, long-time favorites at the Otter Habitat. Luna is young and playful and will provide a full range of "otter antics"  for visitors. Read more...

Grandfather Mountain is a scenic attraction and recognized nature preserve managed by a nonprofit stewardship foundation. It offers a variety of activities from the Mile High Swinging Bridge to the Nature Museum to Alpine hiking trails and native wildlife habitats. Special naturalist programs and guided hikes are available throughout the summer months. The recently built Fudge shop provides a homemade sweet treat in an eco-friendly building. And then, of course, there's also the breath taking mountain scenery - as awe inspiring and pristine as you'll find anywhere.

The entrance to Grandfather Mountain is located on US 221, two miles north of Linville, North Carolina, and one mile south of the Blue Ridge Parkway at milepost 305.  The GPS coordinates are 36.08502N, -81.84646W. (2050 Blowing Rock Highway in Linville, NC).

All Aboard - It's Time for the Polar Express

Nov 5 - 7  'The Polar Express'  comes to life when the train departs Bryson City NC for a journey to our North Pole. Read along with the magical story and meet Santa.
