SpringFest this weekend in Burnsville Offers Mountain Crafts and Handmade Products

March 19, 2016     Burnsville SpringFest    Celebrate the arrival of spring by shopping a wide variety of unique items such as paintings, quilted sheep, teddy bears, wooden bowls, stained glass, painted signs, glass ornaments, beeswax candles, baked goods and much more.  Admission: FREE.


Burnsville NC, the county seat for Yancey County, is the nearest town to Mount Mitchell, the highest mountain east of the Mississippi. 18 additional peaks with elevations exceeding 6,300 feet are also near Burnsville. 

The region surrounding Burnsville boasts of more crafters and artisans per capita than anywhere else in the United States. When you visit downtown Burnsville you will find art galleries, antique shops, restaurants, a handmade paper & tea shop, a coffee shop, and specialty stores all within walking distance from the historic town square.

Carolina Mountains Literary Festival This Weekend in Burnsville NC

September  10-12, 2015     Carolina Mountains Literary Festival   This two day festival, held at several venues in downtown Burnsville, provides a unique, intimate setting for readers and regional authors to mingle.

Enjoy a fascinating array of talks and workshops that include everything from listening to readings of recently published books to learning how to pen a memorable memoir. 

Pre-registration, along with a $25 fee is required for the following workshops: Story from Thin Air (fiction), Making Meaning from our Memories, From Concept to Publishing: Learning the steps for Writing a Memoir, and to Dwell in Possibility (poetry). 

Admission: General sessions free, 3-hour workshops $25 and banquet on Friday September 5 is $30

Mount Mitchell Craft Fair a Favorite Annual Mountain Arts Event

August 7 - 8, 2015     Mount Mitchell Craft Fair   Hundreds of vendors and thousands of visitors will participate in the 59th Annual Mt. Mitchell Crafts Fair. The event takes place on the Town Square and surrounding streets. Handcrafters from all over the United States come to sell their wares including baskets, candles, kettle corn, pottery, stained glass, and so much more. 

Quilt squares appear not only on local barns and buildings but are for sale by some of the best quilters since Betsy Ross. Handmade clothes, purses, and vests, are just some of the items that adorn the beautifully decorated booths. There will also be homemade jams and jellies as well as Barbeque and Southern tea. 

The event is free to the public with bluegrass and cloggin entertainment throughout the day.

Yancy County Big Fall Flea in Burnsville NC

September 27 - 29     Yancy County Big Fall Flea   Don't miss the Yancey County annual “Fall Flea” sale. If you are looking for furniture you'll find it here. If you need pictures you'll find them by the dozens.  You will find just about anything imaginable: antiques, clothes, pottery, kitchenware and utensils, home decor, furniture, Christmas/seasonal, kids' toys/clothes, books/tapes, eectronics, small appliances, tools, outdoor, sporting goods, jewelry, craft supplies and more.

The nearby Old Timey Festival will take place the very same weekend and is within walking distance to the sale. This event is FREE and open to the public.

Glass in the Mountains Celebrates 50 years of Studio Glass

September 20-23   Glass in the Mountains A Celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Studio Art Glass. Events activities include private visits to well known glass artists studios, glass demonstrations and exhibitions. private tour of Harvey Littleton studio and a Gala Event at Town Center.

The Toe River Valley, home to the father of studio glass Harvey Littleton and over 50 other glass artists, will celebrate by hosting a weekend of events happening in and around Burnsville, Spruce Pine, Bakersville, Micaville, and Penland, North Carolina.

Learn about this remarkable glass community and take studio tours, watch glass blowing demonstrations, enjoy a gallery hop of glass exhibitions, including A History of Glass in the Toe Valley exhibit at the Toe River Arts Council in Spruce Pine, and attend a gala evening featuring a lecture and book signing of A Life in Glass by author Joan Falconer Byrd at the Burnsville Town Center.
