Black Mountain Hosts Annual Sourwood Festival

August 9 - 11 36th Annual Sourwood Festival Great music and lots of fun for all ages fills downtown Black Mountain NC. Held each year in August, it's a time for good food, good fun and good friends. Music, dancing, arts & crafts, super food, kid's rides and games, face painting and more in a no alcohol environment make it a perfect event for the entire family.

Black Mountain Marathon and Mt Mitchell Challenge

February 23, 6:45 AM. -Black Mountain hosts the Marathon and Mt Mitchell Challenge. Marathon and Challenge competitors assemble on the starting line at the bottom of Cherry Street in Downtown Black Mountain. At 7AM the START gun is fired for both races. The First Marathoner will get to the Lake Tomahawk finish line at about 10 AM. The First Challenger will finish about Noon. The official end and cut-off for both races is 5 PM.

Participant registration is now full, but watching this exciting race is open to all. A portion of the benefits go to local charities.

Black Mountain Center for the Arts Presents Jazz Concert Series

January 17 Jazz Concert Series at The Black Mountain Center for the Arts This concert features Internationally known Jazz pianist and composer Stevens brings guest artist, bassist Eliot Wadopian, onstage for the January concert. They will be performing acoustic jazz for piano and bass composed by Stevens.

A native of Asheville, Wadopian is a multiple Grammy Award winner, having performed for the past thirty years in the US, Europe and Asia and recorded with many professional ensembles including the Paul Winter Consort.

NC Christmas Event:

December 21-22 Re-discovering Christmas at the Black Mountain Center for the Arts. This is a fun evening of professional theatre and down home Christmas music in an intimate theatre setting in downtown Black Mountain.

Jim and Carol Shores of Acts of Renewal Theatre Co. bring a series of vignettes that welcome young and old to rediscover the hilarity, the mystery, the wonder of Christmas. The evening concludes with a finale about an irrepressible Jamaican wiseman who retells the Christmas story like you've never heard it before. Music by the Holly Hoppers will bring rousing fun to an already great night.

Halloween Event: Haunted Historic Homes Tour in Black Mountain

October 26-27 Haunted Historic Homes Walking Tours In conjunction with the Swannanoa Valley Museum, six property owners on and around the Dougherty Heights Historic District will open their homes and host a ghoulish walking tour to share the intriguing histories (and resident ghost stories) associated with each property.

Tours will last approximately 1.5 hours and groups of 10-15 will leave every half hour, 6:00pm, 6:30pm, 7:00pm, 7:30pm, or 8:00pm. Meet your tour guide at the Swannanoa Valley Museum at 223 West State Street in Black Mountain at least 10 minutes before your scheduled departure time. Refreshments will be provided about halfway through the tour and at the end of the tour. House historians and guides will be in costume. Feel free to wear your costume as well.

Lake Eden Arts Festival (L.E.A.F.) this Weekend

October 18-21 Lake Eden Arts Festival (LEAF) Camp Rockmont hosts a weekend of art, music, and outdoor fun. The annual event offers music and art shows, Kids Village, healing workshops, and lots of food and local beer.

Enjoy dancing (Contra, Salsa, Swing, Waltz), poetry & puppetry slams, folk art & craft exhibitions, outdoor adventure, and the LEAFlet Kid’s Village, a festival in and of itself, LEAF never ceases to offer new and exciting cultural connections. Tickets start at $25

May 10-13 LEAF - Lake Eden Art Festival LEAF is one of the treasured traditions for families and friends across the southeast. Held annually at at Camp Rockmont in Black Mountain, a weekend at LEAF is the equivalent of going on a year-long multi-cultural music, arts, dance, and outdoor adventures journey to "recharges your batteries". The Blue Ridge Parkway at 469 miles long is the nation's longest scenic rural parkway. Now 70 years old it is administered by the National Park Service and host to approximately 20 million visits annually. It connects the Shenandoah Valley National Park with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina and Tennessee. Along the route are opportunities for lodging, dining, camping, hiking and simply enjoying breathtaking views from easily accessible overlooks and picnic areas. The artists of the River Arts District welcome you into their studios to talk with them, see their latest artwork, watch demonstrations, and experience for yourself the magic hidden inside the time-worn factories and warehouses along the French Broad River.

Chimney Rock Park is named for a 500 million-year-old giant granite monolith overlooking Hickory Nut Gorge. Visitors are awed by the breathtaking view that spreads 1200 vertical feet beneath them and 75 miles across the Carolinas. The now state owned park encompasses 1,000 acres offers the best of the mountains in one place with spectacular 75-mile views, hiking trails for all ages, a 404-foot waterfall, a variety of special events and much more. The National Scenic Byways Program is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration. The program is a grass-roots collaborative effort established to help recognize, preserve and enhance selected roads throughout the United States. Since 1992, the National Scenic Byways Program has provided funding for almost 1500 state and nationally designated byway projects in 48 states. The U.S. Secretary of Transportation recognizes certain roads as All-American Roads or National Scenic Byways based on one or more archeological, cultural, historic, natural, recreational and scenic qualities.

Tsali Recreation Area is an outdoors lover's paradise. Probably the most popular features of Tsali Recreation Area are the 39 miles of trails suited for mountain bikers and horse-back riders, as well as hikers. The 4-loop system offers a variety of landscapes. You can climb 1-foot wide rugged paths or travel flat, well-beaten roads. The four trails--Right, Left, Mouse Branch, and Thompson Loops--meander through mixed pine and hardwoods on a peninsula stretching into Fontana Lake. Near Bryson City NC and Robbinsville NC.
