Blue Ridge Parkway 75 Event: Brevard Songcatchers Series

July 18 in Brevard, North Carolina the Songcatchers Music Series is in its seventh year showcasing acoustic music with roots in the Southern Appalachians and the musicians who nurture the tradition of passing this heritage on to others. Concerts begin with a 30-minute opening act by local musicians. After a short break, the featured performer will begin. Blue Ridge Parkway 75 Event, Milepost 410.

Concerts take place in the sunny outdoor amphitheatre at the beginning of the Forest Festival Trail. The amphitheatre and trails are wheelchair accessible. Picnics are welcome, as are chairs between rows of amphitheatre seating. If raining, concerts are moved inside and held in the Forest Discovery Center. Admission for this event is $6.00 for adults 16 years of age and older and $3.00 for youth under 15 years of age, and America the Beautiful and Golden Age pass holders.

Shall we Dance?

July 9 in downtown Waynesville North Carolina kick up your heels with Mountain Street Dances. Both local residents and tourists enjoy these FREE old-fashioned mountain hoedowns which began in the 1950s with live mountain music and dance demonstrations by local clogging teams. This year we are celebrating the Blue Ridge Parkway’s 75th Anniversary.Dances are held in front of the Haywood County Courthouse and begin at 6:30 p.m. and last until 9:00 p.m. Bring a lawn chair or blanket; limited bleacher seating is available. Blue Ridge Parkway 75 Event: The Town of Boone Celebrates!

June 21 - 26 the Town of Boone NC Blue Ridge Parkway 75th Anniversary Celebration offers activities such as a guided Blue Ridge Parkway leisure bike ride; the Headwaters Hike June 23rd guided by Upper Watauga Riverkeepers in partnership with Grandfather Mountain; BBQ and Bluegrass - June 25th - on the Jones House Lawn in downtown Boone, historical/ghost tours of downtown on June 26th; and wine and cheese fundraiser at the WPA post office building in downtown. Blue Ridge Parkway 75 Event: Pickin' on the Parkway Today

June 18 from noon to 2PM stop by for some Pickn’ and Poetry on the Porch. Local musicians, poets, and writers perform on the front porch of the historic “Old Kentucky Home”, the Thomas Wolfe Memorial State Historic Site. Bring a sack lunch and lawn chair and enjoy this downtown cultural event. First and third Fridays of each month May - October. Historic Orchard at Alta Pass - a Blue Ridge Parkway "Must See"

Blue Ridge Parkway 75 Event: Cradle of Forestry 2010 Season Opening

April 10, 9AM-5PM, Cradle of Forestry, NC Highway 276, four miles south of Blue Ridge Parkway Milepost 412 and 14 miles north of Brevard North Carolina. Old time Plowing and Folkways: watch heritage activities such as spinning, wood carving, hearth cooking and interact with a local family plowing the garden with a tem of horses. The Blue Ridge Parkway at 469 miles long is the nation's longest scenic rural parkway. Now 70 years old it is administered by the National Park Service and host to approximately 20 million visits annually. It connects the Shenandoah Valley National Park with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina and Tennessee. Along the route are opportunities for lodging, dining, camping, hiking and simply enjoying breathtaking views from easily accessible overlooks and picnic areas. The artists of the River Arts District welcome you into their studios to talk with them, see their latest artwork, watch demonstrations, and experience for yourself the magic hidden inside the time-worn factories and warehouses along the French Broad River.

Chimney Rock Park is named for a 500 million-year-old giant granite monolith overlooking Hickory Nut Gorge. Visitors are awed by the breathtaking view that spreads 1200 vertical feet beneath them and 75 miles across the Carolinas. The now state owned park encompasses 1,000 acres offers the best of the mountains in one place with spectacular 75-mile views, hiking trails for all ages, a 404-foot waterfall, a variety of special events and much more. The National Scenic Byways Program is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration. The program is a grass-roots collaborative effort established to help recognize, preserve and enhance selected roads throughout the United States. Since 1992, the National Scenic Byways Program has provided funding for almost 1500 state and nationally designated byway projects in 48 states. The U.S. Secretary of Transportation recognizes certain roads as All-American Roads or National Scenic Byways based on one or more archeological, cultural, historic, natural, recreational and scenic qualities.

Tsali Recreation Area is an outdoors lover's paradise. Probably the most popular features of Tsali Recreation Area are the 39 miles of trails suited for mountain bikers and horse-back riders, as well as hikers. The 4-loop system offers a variety of landscapes. You can climb 1-foot wide rugged paths or travel flat, well-beaten roads. The four trails--Right, Left, Mouse Branch, and Thompson Loops--meander through mixed pine and hardwoods on a peninsula stretching into Fontana Lake. Near Bryson City NC and Robbinsville NC.
