August 2 Lockhart conducts Tchaikovsky at The Brevard Music Center Keith Lockhart leads the Brevard Concert Orchestra in a performance featuring the music of Vaughan Williams and Tchaikovsky. It will be followed by Charles Villarrubia presenting a rare performance of Vaughan Williams' Tuba Concerto. Fort Hamby Park is located on the north side of W. Kerr Scott Reservoir. The 1,475-acre reservoir offers excellent boating, canoeing, kayaking and swimming opportunities. Anglers will find channel catfish, large and smallmouth bass, bluegill, threadfin shad, spotted bass, hybrid striped bass and tiger muskellunge. There are miles of hiking trails surround the lake, including the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail. An additional 25 miles of mountain biking trails can be found at the Warrior Creek and Dark Mountain areas.
The Reservoir's campground offers a thick canopy of forest on one side and the
scenic lake shore on the other. There are 33 campsites available, all
with electric hookups, including one large group site that can
accommodate up to 100 guests. Modern amenities like flush
toilets, drinking water and showers create a comfortable camping
experience, while a playground, sandy beach, basketball court and
horseshoe pit provide additional recreation opportunities.

Craft Fair of the Southern Highlands begins this Week
July 18 - 21 at the Civic (Cellular) Center in downtown Asheville: Setting the standard for fine craft shows since 1948, the Craft Fair of the Southern Highlands takes the stage with nearly 200 mountain artists.
The juried participants from the Southern Highland Craft Guild will fill the center selling their works of clay, glass, leather, metal, fiber, mixed media, natural materials, paper, wood, and jewelry. Styles range from contemporary to traditional.
The Fair also features craft demonstrations and, beginning on Friday, local musicians share their love of old time and bluegrass music on the arena stage.

NC Mountain Biking: Hot Doggett 100 Bike Ride in Mars Hill
July 13 Hot Doggett 100 Bike Ride 5th Annual Hot Doggett 100 and Devil's Fork Metric Century Ride with the same challenging 100 mile and 100 kilometer closed loop courses as last year. The 100 mile course covers some of the most scenic and lightly traveled roads anywhere in western North Carolina. July 11 - 12 RoadRunner Magazine Touring Weekend at Wheels Through Time Established in 2006, the RoadRUNNER Touring Weekend is held each year in memory of the magazine’s founder, Christian Neuhauser. 58th Annual Highlands Games and Gathering O' Scottish Clans on Grandfather Mountain
The Gathering begins on Thursday with a picnic, sheep herding and Celtic music. At 7:30 PM The Bear: Assault on Grandfather, a five-mile footrace climbs 1,568 feet in elevation from the town of Linville to the summit of Grandfather Mountain. Over 800 runners will start up the Old Yonahlossee Road from Linville at 7 PM, circle the Highland Games track around 7:15, and head up the Grandfather Mountain summit road. The evening concludes with a torchlight ceremony.
Friday begins with a mountain bike race and continues with a Preliminary athletic competition, sheep herding, music/dancing exhibitions. Celtic Groves will be open and other activities will highlight the day. The official opening ceremony will be held.
Events throughout the weekend range from the Scottish Fiddling Workshop & Jam Session to Highland Wrestling to the Highland Dancing Atlantic International Championship, piping, drumming, Scottish athletic events, track and field events, Scottish country dancing, Scottish fiddling, and Scottish harp. The Annual Swananoa Gathering Begins Today in Asheville
July 7 - 13 Swanannoa Gathering - Traditional Songs A comprehensive program completely devoted to traditional styles of singing. Unlike programs where singing takes a back seat to the instrumentalists, it is the entire focus of this week, which aims to help restore the power of songs within the larger traditional music scene. This year’s program has several new features. The week’s first night will feature the Gathering’s own Grand Ole Opry, with folks who have performed regularly on the Nashville stage. “Too Slim” from Riders in the Sky will emcee the evening with his hilarious Opry humor and his upright bass.
For the sixth year, Traditional Song Week presents a gathering of highly influential singers and musicians who have remained devoted over the years to preserving and promoting traditional song.
This year’s program has several new features: The week’s first night will feature the Gathering’s own Grand Ole Opry, with folks who have performed regularly on the Nashville stage. “Too Slim” from Riders in the Sky will emcee the evening with his hilarious Opry humor and his upright bass. Bring your boots and hats.
The evening will also introduce the first Traditional Comic Song Contest in which students will have an opportunity to share their funniest versions of traditional songs. The Community Gathering time each day affords the opportunity to experience together as a group diverse topics on the shared love of traditional song.
Several days will be hosted by NPR’s legendary broadcaster, Fiona Ritchie of The Thistle & Shamrock. She will conduct interviews to be aired on the radio with Brian McNeill from Scotland, Cathie Ryan from Ireland, and a panel of staff discussing the future of traditional song. One day Swannanoa’s own Beth Magill will be highlighted, an artist who has influenced many by her life of music.
This year classes in singing with instruments (guitar, fiddle, mandolin) and song accompaniment will also be highlighted as Dáithà Sproule (guitarist for Irish super-group Altan) and new staff member Brian Christianson from Nashville (who performs weekly on the Grand Ole Opry with the Mike Snider Band) are welcomed.
There will also be classes in bluegrass (taught by seven-time IBMA Female Vocalist of the Year, Dale Ann Bradley), blues (taught by Ben Wiley Payton from Mississippi, where the blues originated), gospel, songs of Ireland, Scotland and England, cowboy songs and songs of the frontier (taught by the finest yodeler on the Grand Ole Opry, Ranger Doug), North Carolina mountain ballads, songwriting in the tradition, finding your voice and choosing your songs, shape-note singing, duet harmony, community singing, camp meeting songs and more! The week will also feature nightly concerts and singing sessions, the Old Farmers Ball dance, a children’s program, ample opportunities to mix with other singers, and mid-day Community Gathering times.

The Community Gathering time each day affords the opportunity to experience together as a group diverse topics on the shared love of traditional song.
Several days will be hosted by NPR’s legendary broadcaster, Fiona Ritchie of The Thistle & Shamrock. She will conduct interviews to be aired on the radio with Brian McNeill from Scotland, Cathie Ryan from Ireland, and a panel of staff discussing the future of traditional song. One day Swannanoa’s own Beth Magill will be highlighted, an artist who has influenced many by her life of music.
This year classes in singing with instruments (guitar, fiddle, mandolin) and song accompaniment will also be highlighted as Dáithà Sproule (guitarist for Irish super-group Altan) and new staff member Brian Christianson from Nashville (who performs weekly on the Grand Ole Opry with the Mike Snider Band) are welcomed.
There will also be classes in bluegrass (taught by seven-time IBMA Female Vocalist of the Year, Dale Ann Bradley), blues (taught by Ben Wiley Payton from Mississippi, where the blues originated), gospel, songs of Ireland, Scotland and England, cowboy songs and songs of the frontier (taught by the finest yodeler on the Grand Ole Opry, Ranger Doug), North Carolina mountain ballads, songwriting in the tradition, finding your voice and choosing your songs, shape-note singing, duet harmony, community singing, camp meeting songs and more! The week will also feature nightly concerts and singing sessions, the Old Farmers Ball dance, a children’s program, ample opportunities to mix with other singers, and mid-day Community Gathering times.
If you love NC heritage music either as musician or a listener, this week of education events and concerts is a "must" and most popular event.

La Mer at The Brevard Music Center this Saturday
July 6 La Mer at The Brevard Music Center Grant Llewellyn leads the Brevard Sinfonia in concert with trumpet soloist Neal Berntsen performing Alexander Arutunian's Trumpet Concerto. The concert also includes Rameau's Les fêtes d'Hébé, Bartók's rousing Dance Suite, and one of Debussy's most admired orchestral works, La Mer. PreConcert at 6:50 PM - Special pre-concert performances one hour before curtain, featuring BMC's students and artist faculty. .

July 5-6 Tom Dooley: A Wilkes County Legend The Performance recounts the famous 1860's lovers' triangle tale that became one of the nation's first highly publicized crimes of passion. Performed at the Fort Hamby Amphitheater, the drama brings to life the romance, jealousy, and mystery surrounding the murder of Laura Foster.
