Guided Bird Walk Today at Chimney Rock Park

June 23 Simon Says Guided Bird Walk: Summer Birding at Chimney Rock Park. During the summer, dozens of species of warblers breed in the Park. Join world-traveled expert Simon Thompson to see and hear these feathered friends, including Worm-eating, Swainson's, Black-and-white, Hooded and Yellow-throated Warblers.

The summer-resident Scarlet Tanagers and Wood Thrushes will likely be singing and establishing their territories. Chimney Rock is an official site on the NC Birding Trail and hosts the region’s premier fall migration birding event, Flock to the Rock on Sept. 21-22.

Flock to the Rock this Weekend at Chimney Rock Park

September 29-30 Flock to the Rock If you love birds and birding you need to head for Chimney Rock Park thsi weekend for Western North Carolina’s premier fall migration birding event. Birds flock to Chimney Rock Park, an official site on the NC Birding Trail with 130-plus species spotted.

Families, kids and couples will love the live Birds of Prey programs. All weekend, there will be free guided walks with expert area ornithologists, workshops and bird/nature photography, along with fun activities and bird-related vendors.

Attendees may be able to spot dozens of Broadwing hawks flying overhead to southern wintering grounds during this prime annual hawk migration time.

This is the time of the year when learning the bird songs can really help you find the birds. American Redstarts and Hooded Warblers are easy to see along the Hickory Nut Falls trail where several pairs of Scarlet Tanagers and Wood Thrush also nest every year.

"Earlybird" Guided Bird Walk and Birdhouse Opening at Chimney Rock

Early spring in Chimney Rock can be exciting with spring migrants like the Black-throated Green and Black-and-white Warblers singing. Blue-headed Vireos have been moving through the Park for the past couple of weeks as well. Simon Thompson will be your guide on this easy-to-moderate walk. The Blue Ridge Parkway at 469 miles long is the nation's longest scenic rural parkway. Now 70 years old it is administered by the National Park Service and host to approximately 20 million visits annually. Chimney Rock Park is named for a 500 million-year-old giant granite monolith overlooking Hickory Nut Gorge. Visitors are awed by the breathtaking view that spreads 1200 vertical feet beneath them and 75 miles across the Carolinas. The National Scenic Byways Program is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration. The program is a grass-roots collaborative effort established to help recognize, preserve and enhance selected roads throughout the United States. Since 1992, the National Scenic Byways Program has provided funding for almost 1500 state and nationally designated byway projects in 48 states. The U.S. Secretary of Transportation recognizes certain roads as All-American Roads or National Scenic Byways based on one or more archeological, cultural, historic, natural, recreational and scenic qualities.

Tsali Recreation Area is an outdoors lover's paradise. Probably the most popular features of Tsali Recreation Area are the 39 miles of trails suited for mountain bikers and horse-back riders, as well as hikers. The 4-loop system offers a variety of landscapes. You can climb 1-foot wide rugged paths or travel flat, well-beaten roads. The four trails--Right, Left, Mouse Branch, and Thompson Loops--meander through mixed pine and hardwoods on a peninsula stretching into Fontana Lake. Near Bryson City NC and Robbinsville NC.
