NC fall Leaf Color Report: 10-26-11

There is still lots of color throughout the NC mountain areas at 3,000 feet and below. To the North in the Wilkes County area color is still developing with the peak anticipated within the next week. The drive along route 421 is "spectacular, with all the colors at their height or close to it", as described in the Fall Color Guy Blog yesterday.
In the Smokies and Nantahala Forest there are still vibrant colors in the Fontana area, Murphy, Andrews and Franklin. There are some bare trees now, but still vivid colors. The first signs of snow have appeared on the mountain tops with layers of color at the bottoms making a dramatic picture. The Great Smoky Mountain National Park report for Oct 24 is, "Upper elevation areas are past peak and leaves are off the trees. Mid-elevation areas are currently at peak or slightly past peak. At low elevation, beautifully colored trees are mixed with trees that are still green."
