July 20-21 Spruce Pine BBQ
Championship and Bluegrass Festival This event
features a sanctioned professional BBQ competition, a wings contest, public
tastings, live bluegrass music, a cornhole tournament, championship clogging
teams, craft vendors, BBQ equipment and supplies vendors, local food vendors,
the Spruce Pine Skedaddle 5K and Fun Run, a kids play-area.
The highlight of the weekend is a professional BBQ competition, sanctioned by the Southern BBQ Network. Competition categories
include pork butts, pork ribs (spare ribs or baby back ribs only), and chicken
wings. BBQ Bucks will be sold to the public for the purchase of wings, BBQ sandwiches, BBQ plates, and BBQ by the pound.
One of the featured bluegras bands is Balsam Range, 2011 Winner
IBMA Song of the Year and performer of the #1 Bluegrass hit "Last Train to Kitty Hawk." Based in
Haywood County, North Carolina, Balsam Range consists of five men native to the
region. Lucky Streak,
Ron and Minnie Powell, have been together as a
couple for over thirty years, and have been singing as a duo for almost twenty
years. Barefoot Movement is a group of talented musicians from
North Carolina and Tennessee whose music successfully melds Americana influences
with the invigoration of acoustic modern rock and jazz.
