NC Labor Day Event: Higher than a Kite?

Sept 4 -5 Mile High Kite Festival on Beech Mountain NC. How much string would it take to fly a kite a mile high? Well, lots, actually, at least 5,280 feet. But you can do it with a much shorter line by flying your kite a mile above sea level, high up on Beech Mountain at the Eighth Annual Mile High Kite Festival on Labor Day Weekend.

Festivities start with a kite maker's competition from 2-4 PM on Saturday with prizes for biggest, smallest and best-decorated kites, and all participants receive an official certificate proclaiming: "I flew a kite a mile high at Beech Mountain." Saturday night, an all-ages street dance will be held from 7-10PM .

Sunday is the main day of the festival, from 10 AM - 4 PM. There's no charge for admission and free kites are given to the first 200 children under 12. There will also be a vendor selling a variety of kites, and folks are welcome to bring their own. Other activities include kids' parachute kite races, face painting, and a variety of craft and food vendors.
